Wow.
I have successfully avoided blogging for just a few weeks shy of 4 months; it's a sad state of affairs, to be certain. However, I simply cannot avoid the lure of publishing my thoughts for the world (i.e., all my readers, i.e., one person) - they are bubbling up and begging to be written. (Hopefully this will go slightly better than the revival of The Four Horsemen, which lasted all of 2 days.) Regardless, I have a few topics I would like to write about, none of which I will be doing tonight.
However, I do think that I will start running a weekly feature of sorts - a set of columns and commentary that I find interesting, original, entertaining, and/or especially relevant. This week, we'll touch on immigration, liberal hypocrisy (which should be a fairly regular topic), and
From Joseph Perkins of the San Diego Union-Tribune, " Debate immigration issue, not each side's integrity." This column sounds off on the debate about what legal rights illegal immigrants should have. Personally, I completely agree with Perkins on this one; illegals should not be granted driver's licenses, they should be deported. Illegals should not be allowed to take advantage of free public schooling - they don't pay taxes, but they're getting tax-funded benefits at our schools. Now, this isn't to say that we should conduct a door-to-door search of heavily foreign neighborhoods, booting out everyone that doesn't have a green card. We do need to find a viable solution to illegal immigrants that are already living in the United States; neither blanket amnesty nor blanket deportion are realistic options. If you have a good idea, post here; if not, don't leave me an angry message calling me a racist and a bigot, because I'm not. I just don't think that you should get government benefits if you don't help support the government.
From Anne Coulter (no, don't say it, I know what you're going to say), some interesting thoughts as to liberal hypocrisy concerning homosexuals. You see, there was quite a big controversy a little while back as to this reporter who had a pass into a White House newsroom, and he gave the President a few friendly questions. However, the liberal "mainstream" media had an apoplectic attack when they found out that he might be gay, and attacked him for allegedly running a homosexual escort service some years ago. Suffice it to say that this is rather self-explanatory commentary on the "tolerant, compassionate Left." As usual, there are some rather pointed comments in the article, but overall, Coulter makes a very good assessment of the hypocrisy of the newsmedia in this case.
Finally for tonight, some extremely early viewpoints for 2008: Hillary's chameleon-esque charades, and why we should get Condi to run against Hillary. Having already had a lengthy discussion about Condi's viability as a candidate in 2008 as of this point in time, I don't care to opine at length. Suffice it to say that she is VERY highly qualified and hopefully will have built up enough domestic policy credentials in a few years to be a credible candidate in our next election. Of course, I am well aware of how premature all of this is - I just feel that with so much talk about Hillary running next time, we need to have a candidate that can appeal to as many voting blocks as Mrs. Clinton. While I hate the idea of having to pander to different groups of people, the sad fact is that modern politics (not to mention the hot air spewing from windbags like Ted Kennedy) demand a pragmatic approach to vote-getting. If it allows us to appeal to women, blacks, and Hispanics, I think that it is a very good idea to get Condoleezza to run for president.
A few last notes: please don't expect all entries to be as long and verbose as this one. I happen to have an excess of time on my hands at the moment, and thus don't mind spending a good deal of it on an update. Also, I deleted an entry from the tagboard on the left, and if that person returns, I'm probably going to face accusations of censoring those who disagree with me. However, it is also important to note that the entry was extremely vulgar and profane. I have no problem debating with those of the opposite political pursuasion, I just ask that you do it in a mature manner. Anything that consists solely of hard profanity and slurs will just be deleted without comment.

Just an interesting thought
I know it's been quite a long time, but I just thought that this article was spectacular. It's the Boston Herald's editorial in which they endorse George W. Bush for reelection (yeah, you heard it right - Kerry's hometown paper endorsed Bush... of course, Bush's hometown paper endorsed Kerry, so I guess this just evens it out...).
I just thought that the article was very well written and pursuasive. So go read it.

A Brief Article... and a hiatus
Due to excessive amounts of schoolwork coupled with the demands of my job, The Last Word is going on a brief semi-hiatus. I'll update every week or two, but no more than that... I just have too much going on.
And now, for your reading pleasure, my column from the school paper that is coming out tomorrow. Lucky you - you get it a day early as a bonus for being a loyal reader.
For the inaugural run of the second and final year of The Last Word in The North Star, I decided that my limited space would best be used to discuss the alarming extremes that this political season has gone to. This election season has seen mudslinging and personal attacks on an unprecedented level, both from the candidates themselves and from organizations on both sides of the aisle.
One of the forces driving the fiery rhetoric is the large number of radicals on both sides who are turning to methods that border on ridiculous. For instance, what’s the deal with the anarchist groups that plotted (unsuccessfully, thank goodness) to shut down the Republican National Convention by purposefully snarling security arrangements and leaving the door wide open for potential terrorist threats? Or the woman who was recently arrested for interrupting a speech by the First Lady—after giving an interview in which she expressed the desire to torture and murder the president? Or the union worker in West Virginia who ripped a Bush-Cheney ’04 sign from the hands of a three-year-old girl and tore it up? Or Dan Rather of CBS, who accepted unauthenticated, inflammatory documents and presented them on national television as factual in a desperate attempt to discredit President Bush?
While I have nothing against loud, vigorous debate—I’m a pretty big fan, to be perfectly truthful—and I am a staunch supporter of the right to free speech, the actions that we have seen in the past weeks and months have far overstepped the boundaries of reasonable political disagreement. In the words of Joseph Welch (Joe McCarthy’s questioner): “Have you no decency?”
Of course, one can hardly ignore the fact that nearly all of the outrageous acts that have been committed have come from hard-left, anti-Bush radicals who seem bent on not only getting John Kerry elected, but also smearing President Bush with ludicrous untruths and preposterous lies. Still, despite barrages of confrontational political books along with the endless number of ads from liberal 527 groups, the president has managed to stay well above John Kerry in nearly every major poll since the Republican National Convention.
I can only hope that America continues to see through the propagandist drivel of the likes of Michael Moore, Al Franken and Molly Ives.

IMPORTANT:
CBS News finally plans to admit that it was well and truly snookered.
It's about time that they started listening to the dozens of experts that have come forward to discount the false documents. (Just as an interesting diversion, here is an interesting and informative graphic detailing the differences between the CBS documents and real documents.)
In other news, Drudge claimed on his radio show last night that a really big story will be breaking soon - apparently there has been a big conspiracy afoot to either assassinate or cause serious physical harm to the President. Yeah, I know, it sounds crazy, but I'm gonna wait for a few days to see what happens... if it is as big as Drudge was hinting at last night, this could be a major story. Of course, you can stay tuned to The Last Word to provide timely coverage *cough, shifty eyes* if it indeed comes to pass.

The Official Handbook of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy
Yeah, I know I said Sunday, but I've been busy. Regardless, here it is - the first official entry to The Last Word Book Club: The Official Handbook of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, by Mark Smith.
This book is witty, easy to read, and well-rounded. By taking on nearly 30 different topics in one book, it doesn't counter any liberal myth in complete detail, but manages to find several good arguments for nearly every major issue in America today. The book's format - several subheads of "Liberal Lunacies" followed directly by a factual, common-sense rebuttal - makes it excellent for a conservative in the middle of an argument who needs a quick fact or idea to counter the Idiot Hippies.
Of course, radical liberal reviewers on several websites have given the book awful reviews - but what else do you expect liberals to do when presented with the truth? The book shoots gaping holes in arguments against everything from universal healthcare to banning the death penalty to abortion, so you know you have to expect accusations of racism, anti-feminism, and homophobia from the Left.
Of course, the book isn't perfect; there are instances in which rhetoric and ideological arguments get in the way of factual arguments, but these instances are relatively few. The book even has it's own homepage where you can get a VRWC membership certificate. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book as a good source for arguments and rebuttals, both factual and rhetorical.

One other quick update to the CBS document scandal: the first expert quoted by CBS didn't authenticate the documents! He only checked the signatures on the documents, and several other experts have said that it is possible to copy signatures from other, authentic documents. There have been far more people saying that the documents are false than real - and CBS still won't release the originals for "confidentiality issues." In the very least, it is time for an independent investigation into this. Dan Rather insists that they are real, CBS stands behind him, and if the documents are real, they could be highly injurious to the president. It is bad journalism on the part of CBS is they continue to insist that they are real, but refuse to allow anyone to make sure that they are actual, authentic documents.

Forged documents, eh? CBS = FAILURE!
Surprise, surprise - the Democrats try another ploy to cast suspicion on the president's service during the Vietnam War, and it has backfired in a rather spectacular fashion. So get this: CBS comes out with this big, groundbreaking story about how they've unearthed "private memoranda about Bush's service from an officer's personal files", and have it analyzed by some "experts" to make sure it is authentic, and then go on NATIONAL TELEVISION on 2 SEPARATE SHOWS to display it. However, as soon as someone has a real expert look at it, the truth comes out: it was made on a COMPUTER, and, surprise surprise, they didn't have personal computers back in '72 and '73. I mean, the list of discrepancies that the story linked to above are things that I would have noticed, and I'm only in high school!!! I mean, come on now: "curly" apostrophes, superscripted letters, vertical and horizontal monospace typing... all of that should be a dead giveaway that an Army typist in the 1970's could not have possibly created those documents. All of that, of course, doesn't even take into consideration the fact that the wife of the late officer who supposedly kept the memos came out and straight up denied that he even kept records like that! Now CBS is going to have to come out and apologize - not to mention set the record straight - for the ludicrously bad bit of investigative journalism that they were parading as hard news. Serves them right - maybe they should check their facts before trying to smear the president again. Jeez... I just am still amazed at the blatant, biased partisanship that CBS has sunk to. Now try and tell me that the mainstream media is fair, objective and unbiased.... Running a story like that only to be shot down so hardcore is just proof of the liberal bent that networks like CBS have, and I hope that this episode hurts Kerry and boosts Bush as a lesson to the moonbats who are running those ill-disguised propaganda machines masquerading as objective news providers. It's about time that their underhanded tactics backfired on them. NOTE: hopefully, tomorrow will bring the first installment of The Last Word Book Club -- I have recently acquired "The Official Handbook of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy" by Mark Smith, and I must say that it is a pretty good read.

Muslims: Finally Making Some Sense?
Amazing as it is, this is the first time I have ever seen Muslims apologizing for acts of terror and brutality and condemning those who are distorting their religion into something that it is not. Here's a snippet from the article: " 'It is a certain fact that not all Muslims are terrorists, but it is equally certain, and exceptionally painful, that almost all terrorists are Muslims,' Abdel Rahman al-Rashed, the general manager of the widely watched satellite television station Al Arabiya said in one of the most striking of these commentaries. " Did you catch that? "Almost all terrorists are Muslims?" I am genuinely (and pleasantly) surprised at all of this criticism that has either just recently come out, or has been just recently made known. It's high time for these people to stop blaming the Zionists, Americans, and other Western infidels for crimes that their own people have committed. Anyway, I highly recommend reading this article - since it is on the New York Times' website, it may require you to register (which is free!), but I think that it is worth it.

Satellite shot of Hurrican Ivan heading north.
Here's an interesting tidbit - this guy was murdering a load of puppies that he didn't want by shooting them in the head, so one courageous puppy put his paws on the gun, causing the man to shoot himself! Ha! Puppy 1, Man 0.
And another interesting tidbit - this report claims that Ken Jennings the Jeopardy Guy finally ended his streak at 75 games, with total winnings of around $2.5 million dollars. Of course, since Jeopardy is taped so far in advance (they only just aired the episode with his 41st win), we will not see this episode until later in the fall.
Congress will not renew the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban that renews next week, as they will not get a chance to vote on it. I say good - the AWB was never an effective piece of legislation anyway. I personally am not in favor of civilians owning assault rifles, but this law was not the way to do it. For more information on it, head over to FlashBunny and see for yourself.

Well, the EU just took another step down Moron Street, with this claim that the European Union won the Olympics, with a grand total of 82 golds and over 280 medals. OK, I guess I can buy into the whole Continental Unity thing, and congratulating your close allies for doing well is totally fine, but then it goes a step further: "In 2008 I hope to see the teams in Beijing carry the flag of the European Union alongside their own national flag as a symbol of our unity."
What?! Prodi's grandiose dreams of a unified EU superstate are starting to interfere with reality. Has he no shame? Didn't he see how people reacted when they won medals over the last 2 weeks, hugging their national flag and getting teary-eyed as their national anthem played? Wasn't he in tune with the hundreds of thousands of spectators who proudly displayed flags, shirts, hats, buttons, pins, and various other national paraphernalia? Doesn't he care that supporting one's own country (even though that isn't necessarily always the case... but I'll get to that next time) is one of the most important ideals of the Games?
I can only say that I am vastly disappointed in his self-serving proposal - but hey, maybe he's just feeling a little pouty since Italy only won 32 medals, while the US won 103. At least he doesn't have everyone in the EU on his side... God knows what could happen if he did.
Now where was I? Ah yes, athletes competing for their own countries... or not. Felix Sanchez, who, according to that biography, "[a] New Yorker by birth who grew up in Southern California," won the gold medal in the 400m hurdles event. Of course, despite the fact that he was raised in the United States, trained in the United States, and has only left the United States to visit his "homeland" once, he ran under the banner of the Dominican Republic, thus giving a medal that truly should belong to the United States to a scrappy little Caribbean country that has only won a single other medal in the past (a boxing bronze in 1984).
What's up with that? How can someone who has only become what he is thanks to American resources run for another country in good conscience? At best, it is a low trick - at worst, it is medal-stealing. I know, I know, a lot of other countries have the same dilemma, but that doesn't make it right. I also know that a lot of countries don't have the resources to train their own athletes, and that is also fine - as long as someone who is an American citizen isn't going and taking advantage of his parents' ancestry to do something as egregious as this.
On a completely unrelated note, I miss Misha over at the Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler - I mean, Sir George is hilarious and wonderful and all that, but Misha just has his own incomparable way, and now that he is not posting nearly as much as he used to, I find myself missing him. Oh well... no matter who's posting, at least it's still genuine conservative goodness.
